When one person falls ill or is the victim of an unfortunate accident, many people are impacted by the event. Family members, friends, neighbors, business associates and community members all become involved with the recovery of the individual and root for a successful outcome. The disruption in one person's life creates resonating ripples in the pond of their community.
Office mates send flowers to a co-worker; an elementary school sends cards and toys to a sick classmate; a high school holds a fund raiser for a classmate's stricken parent; a radio station holds a special event to raise money for an ill infant. It's people pulling together for the good of one person and his or her family. It's the community acting as one to heal an ill. It's philanthropy at its best. And it works.
