For over a decade, Ron Maher, Jr. and his cousin Mary Bee Gaines have been showing their appreciation for the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center through their annual Polo Match. The event memorializes Ronny Maher Sr., a lover of polo, who passed away after sustaining injuries from a fall off his horse while foxhunting on Thanksgiving Day 1996.

The Shannon Obaker Endowment Fund was recently established at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) by the Orioles in memory of their loving Community Outreach Director, Shannon Obaker. After battling cancer for over a year, Shannon passed away at age 29 in January 2007. In addition to creating a lasting legacy in Shannon’s name, the fund’s main purpose is to provide financial assistance to patients and their families who may experience difficulties in paying for unexpected costs, such as parking, temporary lodging, food costs, prescriptions and other expenses.

This past summer, the fifth annual Robin Knight Memorial Golf Tournament took place at South River Golf Course. More than 120 golfers teamed together to raise money and awareness for melanoma programs at the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center in memory of Robin Knight. A beloved mother, wife and friend of many, Robin lost her battle with melanoma in 1993.

FAIRWAY TO LIFE surpasses $1 million   Nichole Barbuzanes 11/20/2008 2:25:47 PM    
After this summer’s June 30 event, over one million dollars has been successfully raised through the FAIRWAY TO LIFE (FTL) Golf Tournament, Auction and Dinner since its founding in 1998 by Judy Herman. Throughout the years, the tournament has grown considerably, yet has continued to follow its sole mission: to fight breast cancer by raising funds and awareness.

This past spring, the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center was pleased to announce the grand opening of the Center for Image Renewal. Located on the first floor in the Weinberg Atrium, the center offers positive support for cancer patients who may be experiencing the physical effects of treatment programs.

The first Maryland General Hospital Golf Tournament on May 19, 2008 at Hillendale Country Club proved a great success. Over 36 foursomes participated in the tournament. Proceeds raised will help to support Maryland General Hospital’s (MGH) current Capital Campaign.

This year’s Shock Trauma Gala was held on April 26, 2008 at the Baltimore Convention Center. “A Night for Heroes” recognized over 100 Shock Trauma team members as well as Maryland’s emergency medical service providers who extended crucial expertise during the rescue and recovery efforts in 2007 towards two individuals whose life-saving stories were highlighted at the gala.
