About the University of Maryland Children's Hospital

Pediatric doctor with patientEvery day at the University of Maryland Children’s Hospital (UMCH), located within the University of Maryland Medical Center, teams of caregivers deliver cutting-edge medicine in a compassionate way. With more than 20 areas of specialty medicine, children may be seen at one of our many outpatient locations around the State, or they may need to be inpatients at our Baltimore hospital. Recognized throughout Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic region as a resource for critically and chronically ill children, UMCH physicians and staff excel in combining advanced medicine with family-centered care. With more than 120 full-time faculty physicians, our goal is to be the hospital of choice for the children and families of Maryland and beyond.

Specialized Care for Children

University of Maryland Children’s Hospital is nationally ranked for the second year in a row as one of the top 50 Best Children’s Hospitals for Pediatric Cardiology & Heart Surgery in U.S. News & World Report’s 2020-2021 Best Children’s Hospital list.

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) has 19 private rooms where children heal from an array of issues, including major surgery, respiratory failure or acute infection. The PICU provides state-of-the-art procedures such as ECMO and dialysis.

A team of pediatric emergency medicine experts in the Pediatric Emergency Department works around the clock to support children with a range of issues, including infections, organ failure and respiratory disease.

For the youngest and most fragile of patients, diagnosis and care begins in the womb through advanced fetal care and high-risk obstetrics at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Newborns who are premature or born with complications receive the highest level of care in the Drs. Rouben and Violet Jiji Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). They can then be followed by both medical and surgical services to ensure they grow up to be happy, healthy children.

The Children’s Heart Program specializes in providing innovative medical, interventional and surgical care for patients with congenital and acquired heart issues from before birth through adulthood.

The Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology provides the full spectrum of diagnostic and clinical care to patients from birth to age 21 who have cancer or blood diseases. As a member of the Children’s Oncology Group, we share in the commitment to treating and curing childhood cancer. Advanced treatment options include pediatric bone marrow transplants.

Pediatric gastroenterologists diagnose diseases within the entire gastrointestinal tract through the use of a non-invasive camera that patients swallow in pill form, which allows specialists to see inflammation and obstruction inside the body. Conditions like inflammatory bowel disease, which is on the rise in young patients, and celiac disease can then be successfully treated after proper diagnosis.

Two mobile health units provide care for children in the local community. The Breathmobile is a custom-built pediatric asthma and allergy clinic that travels to over two dozen schools, providing ongoing asthma and allergy care to children. Additionally, the Division of Community Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine health van provides youth and young adults in West Baltimore with valuable wellness information and health screenings.
